Club History


  • 1869 - Grosvenor Rowing Club was founded to serve ‘the clerks and assistants in the city’.
  • 1888 - Allen Potts, a student from the University of Virginia, whilst rowing for Oxford, he swapped his rowing scarf with a GRC rower. On his return to the USA, Potts was wearing the GRC scarf at a rally when the University of Virginia was picking its colours. Someone saw the scarf and proposed that the University took the same colours, to this day the University share the same colours as GRC.
  • 1889 - The first recorded win for the Club – the Wirral Challenge Cup at Chester Regatta.

  • 1899 - 1945 This period saw a number of GRC members in active service with the armed forces in various wars. Records show that sadly at least ten members were killed in action, thereby making the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

  • 1961 - The first boat was named after a member of the Duke of Westminster's family.
  • 1969 - The Club’s centenary year, the Duke of Westminster presented the Club with a silver replica of the ‘Admiral of the Dee regalia’ oar, this is worn by the club chairman on special occasions.
  • 1973 - Women were permitted to become fully fledged members of Grosvenor Rowing Club.
  • 1979 - Sheila Barrett became Grosvenor RC Captain, she became the first woman in the country to captain a rowing club for both men and women.

  • 1982 - The current boat house was opened
  • 1989 - Helen Mangan became the first athlete to represent GRC in Great Britain colours
  • 1998 - Grosvenor rower Juliet Machan was the first GRC athlete to became a World Champion (women’s lightweight pair).
  • 1999 - The women’s squad won the Di Ellis Trophy at the Women’s Head of the River race for the first time.

  • 2005 - The Master's squad won the club's first Veteran World Champions title. (WVC 4+)
  • 2007 - The club recorded their first ever international win (Ghent International) and reached the furthest round in the club history at Henley Royal Regatta (Semi finals of the Wyfold Challenge Cup).
  • 2008 - Best ever finishing position at Men's Head of the River Race (14th Place) and furthest the club has ever achieved in the Thames Challenge Cup at HRR (Quarter Finals).
  • 2009 - GRC became one of the first clubs in the country to be accredited by British Rowing as a pioneer ‘Explore rowing’ club.

  • 2013 - GRC donated "The Grosvenor Cup" to Women's Henley Regatta for adaptive rowing.
  • 2013 - The Men's Squad qualified for the Thames Cup at Henley Royal Regatta
  • 2014 - The Women's Squad win the club's first ever senior trophy at a Henley event. The Lester Trophy for Club Coxed fours.
  • 2014 - Henley Women's Regatta winners represented England at The Home Countries Regatta in Cork.
  • 2014 - Many GRC members recognised at British Rowing Awards.
  • 2014- The Duke of Westminister names the eight: Lt Thomas Higgins MC. In honour of WW1 veteran and club member.
  • 2015 - Gareth Syphas won U23 Gold at the British Indoor Rowing Championships.
  • 2016 - 29th and 2nd in Provincial pennant at Women's Head of the River.
  • 2016 - Finalists at Henley Women's Regatta in Club Eights event.
  • 2017 - Lucy Doherty won U23 Bronze at the British Indoor Rowing Championships.
  • 2017 - Lucy Iball came 9th at GB senior squad trials.
  • 2018 - At the Home Countries Regatta in Cork. Lucy Iball and Maddie Archer won W2X and W4+ respectively for Wales.
  • 2018 - Chris Hudson, Laura Champion, Carly Morris and Lucy Doherty represented Team Manchester at the Inaugural Power 8's Sprint regatta in Bristol
  • 2018 - Winners of Women's Club 2X at Rowing Championships.
  • 2018 - Lucy Iball came 8th in Lwt and Maddie Archer came 14th at GB senior squad trials.
